In this discussion, organised by Liverpool SciBar, equipment, artefacts and photographs will be used to illustrate the different aspects of an unusual leisure time activity that combines healthy exercise, skill at reading a river and expertise in washing gold bearing gravel with a gold-pan.
Ron Callendar grew up in wartime Lanarkshire and developed an early interest in history when he heard that the Scottish crown contained local gold. After National Service he began washing gold in Scottish rivers. Since then he had visited the locations of the world's gold rushes and participated in gold panning championship in Finland, Sweden, California, Scotland and France.
