A history of the world in eight million objects: what is the British Museum for now?

Dr Jonathan Williams, deputy director of the British Museum

As deputy director of the British Museum, Dr Williams has overall responsibility for the Museum’s collections and research. Born in Liverpool, and brought up on the Wirral, he studied for his undergraduate degree in Classics and doctorate in Ancient History at Oxford. His career began as curator of Iron Age and Roman coins at the British Museum. He then went on to coordinate the Museum’s international strategy, and until 2012 was Keeper of its Department of Prehistory and Europe.
